The National Amateur Radio Alliance has purchased WhatIsHamRadio.com and built it out as a free, plain-English introduction to amateur radio for the general public.
Most amateur radio material online assumes you already know what a band plan is. WhatIsHamRadio.com starts earlier than that: what ham radio actually is, what operators do with it, how it differs from CB and GMRS, and what it costs to begin.
