Meeting ideas: the hands-on new ham meeting
An hour of building, measuring and operating instead of an hour of announcements. A format any club can run, with a curriculum, a kit list and a budget.
A new license teaches somebody the rules. It does not teach them how to put up an antenna, crimp a connector, choose a power supply or check into a net without their voice shaking. Those are learned by doing them once, next to somebody who has done them before — which is exactly what a club is for.
The format below has been run successfully by clubs for years: a separate meeting, roughly monthly, where the whole hour is one practical lesson. Set up, teach, tear down, go home. It suits new operators and it suits experienced ones who never happened to learn a particular thing, and it costs a club very little. Nothing here is a NARA program you have to sign up for — take it, change it, and run it under your own club's name.
How long
An hour to ninety minutes, including setting up and putting away. Anything longer and the room thins out; anything shorter and nobody gets their hands on the equipment.
How often
Monthly, on its own night rather than bolted onto the business meeting. A club with a full calendar can run it quarterly and still get through a useful cycle.
Who runs it
One person leading, one or two helping. The helpers matter more than the leader: with soldering irons or hole punches out, people need somebody at their elbow.
Who comes
Anybody. Somebody licensed thirty years ago will still learn something from an evening of antenna measurements, and they will end up teaching half the room.
Repeat it
Run the same curriculum around again. Nobody attends everything, and a lesson is worth sitting through twice. Plan on somebody being a new ham for about a year, after which they should be helping teach.
What it costs
Budget roughly $300 a year for consumables so people take home what they built — coax, connectors, wire, heat shrink, powerpole housings. Tools are borrowed or bought once.
The club kit
Two large storage bins hold everything, and one member keeps them between meetings.
- Hand tools: crimpers, cutters, strippers, a coax stripper, screwdrivers, a hole punch borrowed or bought.
- Two or three soldering stations, solder, flux, heat shrink and a heat gun, plus a power strip for each table.
- Test gear: a multimeter or two, a simple SWR meter, an antenna analyzer if the club owns one, a field strength meter.
- Consumables: RG-8X, PL-259s, powerpole housings and contacts, 12- and 16-gauge wire, SO-239 chassis mounts.
- A radio the club is willing to see handled: an HT, a mobile VHF/UHF rig, and an older HF radio for the on-air nights.
A year of lessons
Each of these is one evening. Run them in any order; the early ones need the least equipment.
Handhelds, properly
Program one from the front panel with no computer. Repeater offsets, tone, simplex against duplex, and a live demonstration of desense so people understand why the radio goes deaf.
Build a coax jumper
RG-8X and crimp-and-solder PL-259s, one jumper each, taken home. Then measure them, and pass around a few with deliberate faults.
Build a 2 meter antenna
A quarter-wave ground plane from house wire and an SO-239, tuned with an SWR meter. Time permitting, a two-element wire beam and a field strength meter to show that direction is real.
Cables and heat shrink
Splicing and terminating DC cable, why a crimp beats a twist, and where AC practice differs. Everybody leaves with a cable they made.
Solder a kit
One small kit built by the room, a part or two each, with several irons going and helpers on hand. For many people this is the first thing they have ever soldered.
Powerpole night
Make a set of jumpers to a common standard so the club can share power at field day and in emergencies. Bring several crimpers so nobody waits.
Mobile installation
Punch an NMO mount in a real vehicle, run the feedline, and take power from the battery the right way. Two cars gives you two opinions, which is the point.
Power supplies
A switcher and a linear side by side under load. Watch the voltage sag and the wire warm with undersized conductors, then do it again with proper wire.
Meters and measurement
Continuity, voltage, current and resistance. A box of unmarked resistors, some tired batteries, LEDs, and those faulty jumpers from the coax night.
Nets and traffic handling
What a net control operator actually does. Hand out the preamble, run a practice net in the room, and cover directed nets, traffic and emergency operation.
Find the fault
A power supply that has been sabotaged, an oscilloscope, and a room working out why. Clipping, ripple and audio tones on a screen make more sense than any explanation.
Callsigns and paperwork
Vanity callsigns, what the FCC requires of you, keeping your license current, and the sites that make all of it less painful.
An antenna petting zoo
A dozen 2 meter antennas on a table — rubber duck, magnet mounts, NMO, J-pole, dipole, small beam, a home-brew reflector — and an honest discussion of gain, pattern and polarization.
Get on HF
Put up a 40 meter dipole at a sensible height, feed it properly, work somebody, then pass the microphone around the room. Cover control operators and license classes while the band is open.
Repeaters and coverage
Repeater directories on a phone and a laptop, what coverage claims mean, linked systems, and the lists your neighboring clubs publish.
Awards and QSLs
Worked All States, DXCC, Logbook of the World, paper cards, bureaus and QSL managers — the reasons people keep logs.
Satellites and the ISS
Show a recorded pass and the equipment that made it, then schedule a live attempt outdoors on another day when the pass is at a sane hour.
Publish it, or half the value is lost
Put a page on your club's website with the dates, who to contact, and what each evening needs. Add the lists people keep asking for: the repeaters worth programming in your area, the nets and when they meet, and where members buy or borrow tools. New operators find that page long before they find your meeting.
